  15. A Ruckus over Rhesus

  18. <p>     The monkey business started back in 1973 when Charles River
  19. Laboratories set up a breeding colony of rhesus monkeys on an
  20. island in the Florida Keys. Since then the primates have gone
  21. ape, swelling in numbers to more than 4,000, fouling the water
  22. and destroying endangered mangrove trees on state-owned land.
  23. Despite protests from environmentalists and nearby property
  24. owners, Bausch & Lomb Inc., which bought the colony in a
  25. package deal in 1984, refused to relocate it. Then in May the
  26. state department of natural resources quietly agreed to a
  27. settlement in which Bausch & Lomb would be allowed to phase out
  28. the colony over the next 20 to 30 years.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     Governor Bob Martinez, who is seeking a second term, has
  31. decided to stop monkeying with the issue. He rejected the
  32. proposed settlement and insisted that Bausch & Lomb pay for
  33. replacing the lost mangroves. Says Martinez: "In this case, the
  34. environment should be top banana."
